Dr. Gerson graduated with honors from State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, and completed medical internship and residency at Cornell Division, Bellevue Hospital and Mount Sinai Hospital. He completed a two-year gastroenterology fellowship at the same institutions. His current positions include Clinical Professor and Attending Physician at Mount Sinai.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Gerson has authored numerous research articles on various gastrointestinal subjects. He has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Gerson has served overseas, as a Peace Corps Physician in Nigeria for two years, where he was a Visiting Instructor, University College Hospital, Ibadan. In addition, he has served as a Visiting Volunteer Physician for Care-Medico in Peru, and has been an invited lecturer in Brazil, Ireland, Indonesia, India and China.

Dr. Gerson received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at New York University, receiving a New York State Psychological Association award for outstanding research in psychology. She completed postdoctoral training at New York University's Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy and advanced supervisory training at the Minuchin Center for the Family. Her current positions include Supervisor and Faculty of the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and Director, Advanced Specialization in Couple and Family Therapy, New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy.

Dr. Gerson is recognized internationally for her integrative writing about psychoanalysis and family therapy. She has published numerous articles as well as a book, The Embedded Self: A Psychoanalytic Guide to Family Therapy (Analytic Press, 1996). She is the Founding President of Section VIII (Psychoanalysis and Family Therapy) of Division 39 of the American Psychological Association).

In the area of health psychology, Dr. Gerson is a member of the teaching faculty at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Division of Gastroenterology. She has conducted original research and published articles about the psychological aspects of inflammatory bowel disease, and has served on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. She is currently Co-Chair, Task Force on Psychoanalysis and Health Care, Division 39.

Dr. Gerson was a member of a W.H.O international research project in Nigeria, where she conducted her own psychological research projects, and has been an invited lecturer in Israel, Peru, China and Germany.
